So tell me why this is better than using my SMART board? I can do the same thing with my SMART board that you did on this app. What is the advantage, if anything? I’m really trying to see how to use my ipad in my classroom, but I’m not finding any real advantages over my SMART board.

For this lesson there is no difference or real advantage. Looking forward the advantage is my kids will use these apps to create on their own soon. The iPad is beneficial as a tool to create and collaborate. We are working towards that in Kinder. Soon they will be making their own diagrams, books, movies etc to show their learning independently with the iPad in centers. That is the advantage, the iPad can act like a smartboard but also do other things.

I see the advantage being cost. I don’t have a smartboard. I already have a decent projector and laptop. All I need is an iPad an airplay app and Explain Everything app. Much lower cost and very portable.

I am still in the discovery stage with iPads. We were given 10 to use (grade level) this year. How do you quickly load photos on to them? Do you have to do each one individually? When and where do you let the kids find their own photos? Thanks for your blog, your videos, and your expertise! My pinterest board is full of pins thanks to your willingness to share.

  3. This is great, Matt, thanks so much for sharing! How did you screencapture this tutorial?

    Hi Matt,
I’ve been following your blog for a while now and find some amazing ideas here. Thanks for sharing your ideas and class journey with the world. My students are currently using the Educreations app to create brief math instructional videos. So far the projects are showing a tremendous amount of value, student understanding and expression. I’ve heard that Explain Everything is similar, or possibly even better than Educreations. I’m attempting to show the difference between the two apps to my director. Do you prefer one over the other?

    • Matt Gomez says:

If I could only have one I would pick Explain Everything because it has more features. However, I prefer Educreations for younger kids because it is more simple to use. Both have value and really we need to give kids options and let them pick the app they want to use. That is my ultimate goal.

Good to know …. I’ve been using Educreations because of the cost and user-friendly interface, but see the potential in Explain Everything. I agree with giving students options in how they want to present content. At some point I’d like to have students pick their own communication tool/app to show their learning. Right now we’re in the process of building a repertoire of tools to make that happen.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. We are piloting iPads in Kinder this year and I also have been wondering about explain everything so thank you. Do the lessons upload to a website for explain everything like Educreations does?

Hey Matt – great info as usual! I really appreciate your sharing, especially how your graphic organizer moved when your students were moving their nouns. Could you have locked that in place? Working with EE this afternoon and just stumbled upon that feature. EE is so awesome. Super easy if someone has notebook software experience (noticed the smart board comment above). Thanks again for all your sharing! Makes my job a lot easier! :)
