This Continues To Be My Favorite Tech Tool

This is an edit of a post from a while back…

My favorite technology tool in the class is the digital camera. My kids have access to it all day. They are allowed to get it anytime to take pictures of things they want to document or share. We constantly use the images to review our learning and also share that learning with parents and friends around the world.

A few things I love about the digital camera (when kids are given control)…

– it is a way for the students to share learning (gives them a voice)

– we get to see things from their perspective

– it is a review of their learning

– they are practicing how to capture a thought with an image

– the students learn how to use a camera

The next step is of course sharing these images. I have a post coming soon that will describe the ways that we share pictures from our class using a class blog.

Hi Matt, Where did you get those brightly colored blocks? They look like foam and I’d appreciate
a lead about where to get them.

I love using the camera. But I haven’t put it in the hands of my kids. We’re going to do that this year.

Gave my digital camera to a kinder who didn’t talk yet on our 1st. Field trip. Made book. Got him not only talking, but”reading.” Creation is great.

    Hi Matt,
I love the digital camera and want the students to use it next year. Do you have any suggestions for how to deal with the following:
How do you keep track of who has taken which pictures?
Do you ever have students taking many, many pictures? (I.e. lots for you to sort out and deal with later)
I’m looking forward to your next post.

I’m looking forward to your post about a class blog. I am seriously considering using a class blog with pictures taken by the kids.

Very cool Matt. I’m a 5th grade teacher and I had a digital camera last year but never got around to using the pictures to post on a blog. This year, I’m planning on using one of my old iPhones that serves more as an iTouch now since it doesn’t have service and have the students take pictures on Instagram using a profile I made for our class. The phone won’t connect to Instagram on the school network so if a student tries to upload, it will say ‘upload failed, try again later’ but that actually helps me because I can then take it home, look over then picture, and then upload it from home.

I’m thinking through security and everything and may or may not make the account private. I may have a protocol where they have to just use initials when referring to anyone in the photo, as well as themselves when crediting the photo (ie. XB learning about the water cycle! -KP)

I plan on having a link to the Instagram feed in my signature of my emails and may post them up on a Facebook class page that I haven’t decided yet if I want to do.

Could you recommend a good digital camera for the classroom? Thanks.
